A Chocolate Barbecue: Barbecued Chocolate Bananas Recipe
I often like to experiment with my foods, mixing different things together and seeing what flavours come out of it. To me this is the mark of any good chef; the ability to experiment with foods and create flavour combinations that you would never have discovered otherwise. People would look at what I’d come up with and find it a little odd, but then they would try that combination and turn into a fan – although it should be noted that it didn’t always turn out and could sometimes be a food disaster! However, when it comes to barbecued food I tend to stick to the standard stuff. I would never have dreamed of combining chocolate with the hot grill of a barbecue, but then again who would?
Well, as usual I continue to surprise myself as – not only has it been done – it’s been tried multiple times as a quick search through Google taught me. Maybe I shouldn’t be so surprised when we live in a world where the deep fried Mars bar exists. Still, the following recipes I’ve found during my research show that you don’t have to make up a separate desert when you can cook one on your barbecue grill instead, although I’m not sure everyone would appreciate it. If you want to be even more daring you can even combine the chocolate with the meat itself, although we can’t be responsible if it tastes absolutely awful.
I’ve posted a video of the popular BBQ Pit Boys making barbecued chocolate bananas above, but it’s you’ll find that it’s actually a pretty common recipe if Google is anything to go by. It’s a great desert for the kids, but adults can enjoy it just as equally too.
You’ll find that the majority of recipe sites have this recipe in some form or another but for now this is the basic recipe;
- 4 unpeeled bananas
- 8 chunks of milk chocolate
- Preheat your barbecue grill
- Use a sharp knife to make a slit along the majority of the length of the unpeeled banana skin and nearly through the banana (but not all the way).
- Place two chunks of chocolate into each banana, making sure they’re well in there so the chocolate doesn’t end up simply dripping into the grill.
- Push the skins closed and lay them on the grill. Some people suggest wrapping them with aluminium foil before you place on the grill, but it’s up to you. Cook them for around 10 minutes, until the skins have blackened and the chocolate has melted.
- Enjoy the creamy texture of melted chocolate and banana! You can add marshmallows or ice cream if desired.
If you’ve ever had chocolate spread sandwiches, which reminds me of being a kid followed by my poor university days, then you may want to try grilled dark chocolate sandwiches. These actually sound really nice and are pretty simple to make, taking around 20 minute’s tops before you’re drooling over a plate of them. See the full recipe here.
Finally, although this isn’t something you could cook up on the barbecue it does have that distinct barbecue flavour. Kakao Chocolate have come up with this odd combination of chocolate and barbecued crisps, which you can actually buy from them. Maybe it’s perfect for those days that it’s raining and you can’t try a chocolate barbecue combination, or your barbecue has broken and you haven’t got around to buying a new charcoal barbecue. This is something you can easily try yourself, as all you need is a pack of your favourite brand of barbecued crisps and some melted chocolate. Again, this isn’t something I’ve tried and at first look it does sound pretty disgusting, but I may give this one a go for the sake of this blog!
I do hope that this blog post hasn’t put you off barbecued food for good! You may even like it if you try one of the combinations here, who knows? The bananas don’t sound bad at all, although the chocolate/coffee sauce may take some getting used to.
