Barbecue Sweet Potato Fries Recipe

The beauty of the potato is that it has a million different uses and each one, if prepared and cooked correctly, can tasty absolutely wonderful. In our last article we covered Buttermilk and Parmesan Potatoes and also a recipe for delicious barbecue relish

Today’s barbecue side dish chooses a potato renowned for its versatility and has been used domestically for over 5000 years. Enter Oven Baked Sweet Potato Fries.

Barbecue Sweet Potato Recipe

Cooking Sweet Potato Fries

The number of sweet potatoes that you use will depend on how many people you are cooking for, we will cover for approximately 4 people as a small side dish. Increase the quantities as you desire.

  • 1000g of Sweet Potato (3 -4 large ones)
  • One quarter cup of olive oil (other vegetable oil is fine but the fries will taste better with olive oil.
  • One tablespoon of salt
  • Two tablespoons of sugar

Select your favourite spices from: Cajun spice, smoked paprika, 5 spice, onion powder or Garam masala etc. Once you have perfected the art of cooking these you can always experiment with the different spices that are available.

Instructions

Get the oven nice and hot to around 450° F – this temperature will be perfect for that extra crispiness. Pop in a large baking tray to pre heat.

The next step in this guide leaves you with a choice on whether to peel the potatoes or not. From a personal point of view, we would peel them but some people do like the skin.

Once peeled, chop the potatoes to your fancy, whether you want thick cut wedges or chunky fries the choice is all yours.

Pop the chopped potatoes into a large enough bowl and pour the olive oil all over.

Sprinkle with your desired seasoning and mix well ensuring that all of the chunks are covered in spices and oil. The oil will not only allow the seasoning to stick together, but will also prevent the potatoes from sticking to the tray.

Grab yourself the pre heated baking tray from the oven and proceed to spread the potatoes on it.

Cook in the oven for 25-30 minutes, and be sure to check on them 2 or 3 times while cooking. Halfway through the cooking process, turn over all of the pieces and return the tray to the oven for the remainder of the cooking time.

You will notice that the wedges/fries will go a lovely golden brown and will be ready to eat in no time at all. Serve these at any barbecue party as a little extra side dish that will not only go down really well with your guests but won’t hurt the pocket either.
