It's Not Just About The Food: Fun Barbecue Party Ideas
Holding a barbecue and grilling some good old fashioned red meat is all well and good, but a barbecue isn’t just about what food you’ll be serving on the day. People come to barbecues for companionship, to have a good chat and a laugh with their family and friends. Barbecues are a great way to have fun on a hot summers day, and it’s almost become a British pastime to drag the barbecue out of storage whenever we see the sun show its face. Aside from having a good chin-wag and a few drinks though, there are other activities you can do; and there are fun barbecue party ideas for kids and adults alike.
So, get that barbecue out, get someone cooking the food and have fun with the following activities while you’re waiting for that tasty grub to be served. After eating, have some more fun! The possibilities are endless, but here are some great ideas.
A water slide that you can lay across your lawn is great fun for kids, but you’ll no doubt get adults having a go too! There are a number of different types of slide; some of them have your pouring on the water manually while others (such as this one available at Amazon) allow you to attach a hose for a constant supply of water. Whatever type you end getting, make sure there’s enough water on there before you begin sliding and that it’s regularly topped up. Also ensure you have a big enough lawn in the first place, as you don’t want to end up flying into the fence!
We all loved a good water fight as kids, and kids these days have taken up the mantel with glee. You can use water guns, or simply buckets of water or water balloons. It’s also a brilliant way to cool down! If you do have a water fight make sure that everyone keeps well away from the hot barbecue and food preparation areas and if people don’t want to be involved don’t start throwing water balloons at them.
Paddling Pool (or Hot Tub!)
If you’re lucky enough to have a swimming pool in your garden then, not only are we immensely jealous, but you can have plenty of fun in that. For the rest of us getting a small paddling pool is the way to go, especially for the kids. It’s a great way to cool down on a hot day!
Outdoor hot tubs are a good idea too, although obviously more expensive. There are cheaper inflatable types if you don’t want to spend a fortune, and it’s great to spend some time lounging in one with your friends and a few drinks when the warm air turns a bit chilly.
This encompasses plenty of games. The UK loves football, so no doubt someone will want to kick a football around on the lawn. You could also play catch, badminton, or even attach a basketball hoop to the wall for an impromptu competition. Obviously bear in mind the people around you and the barbecue, so play any ball games well away from where you could accidentally hit something or someone with the ball.
If you don’t want to be messing about with balls there are plenty of other games you can play too. Ring toss is one we normally get out at parties, where you toss your rings with the aim of getting it on to a peg. Aside from that there’s everyone’s favourite Twister, hide and seek, scavenger hunts, three legged race and more. Just think creatively and you should be able to come up with something fun, at least to keep the kids occupied.
Most parties have music, after all it wouldn’t be much of a party without it, but when you’re outside you shouldn’t play it too loud if you have neighbours. That said some low music being piped out somewhere in the garden adds a bit of flair to the party and gets people tapping their feet. Better still, if you know someone who has musical talent – such as being able to play the guitar – ask them if they wouldn’t mind doing a few numbers at your barbecue. I know it’s a bit cliché to be sitting around a campfire with someone singing and playing guitar, but that’s summer for you!
